Great News Re: Abortion

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 6th, 2018

Charleston, WV - Yesterday, the House of Delegates voted overwhelmingly to pass Senate Joint Resolution 12, which reads in part: "Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of abortion."
With the language in this Joint Resolution passing both chambers of the legislature, it now heads to the November ballot as a proposed constitutional amendment. Voters will have the opportunity to turn out to the polls and approve this amendment to the constitution, effectively ending Medicaid-funded abortions in West Virginia.
"West Virginians overwhelmingly believe in protecting the unborn and our Republican Majority in the West Virginia Legislature took a massive step in sending this decision directly to the ballot," WVGOP Chair Melody Potter said. "This November, voters all across the state will turn out to vote for all of our pro-life Republicans and approve this constitutional amendment."
West Virginia is currently just one of seventeen states that allows government-funded abortions. After this amendment is approved by the voters, we'll join the vast majority of states as well as the federal government in preventing taxpayer dollars from paying for any abortion services.
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources says that West Virginia taxpayers have spent more than $10,000,000 on approximately 35,000 abortions. And just last calendar year, Medicaid paid for more than 1,500 abortions.
The loss of even one unborn life is one too many. The West Virginia Republican Party, our conservative Republican legislators, and our conservative Republican candidates are proud to be champions for the protection of innocent, unborn babies.
