Wasting School Money?

I have a question and it goes like this:  We get $400,000 extra per year of Forest money--money that not every county gets--bonus money.

The state pays to educate our students with annual funding based on the per pupil cost of that education.  That money is intended to pay operating costs such as personnel,  transportation, and maintenance.

That amount of money is based on the number of students we have to educate.  All counties are supposed to get an amount necessary to educate each child in school.

For several years, the Pocahontas County has been getting a special payment because of its sparse population density.  The county gets a guaranteed amount of money for 1400 students.  We get this despite the fact that the actual number of students is considerably less than 1400.  (perhaps 1170)

This, then, is in excess of the amount of money it actually takes an average school to educate its children.  55 districts across the state have to provide an education based on X amount of money.  There are a few exceptions such as Pocahontas which gets an excess amount from the Legislature.

We pay board members $160 per meeting--the maximum allowed by law.  The board has had nine meetings in a row.

The board has just hired a contract lawyer to do the job of the prosecuting attorney who is the statutory attorney for the board.  The elected prosecutor cannot charge for his services.  Yet, the board hires another lawyer and gives him $36,000 per year to represent them.

By their own admission the schools are falling apart.  This has been based on "lack of funding."  But that can't be true!  There is no "lack of funding."  There may be a "lack of budgeting,"  but if that were true, it is a "lack" not because of $$$$ but merely of a matter of priority.

There's an old saying:  You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.  Your board of education is knee deep in $$$$, they just don't know how to spend the $$$$ they have on the right things. (like maintenance)

Apparently,  our system doesn't value our buildings enough to put the necessary $$$$ into them to keep them up.  So if we don't take care of what we already have, can will w be do the same thing to the new buildings and let them fall down!  Even a car has to have an oil change once in a while.

There's a statement I like:  You can't run a Cadillac  on a Model T budget!  But the difference is that Pocahontas has had a Cadillac budget for years but was too stingy to put its money into maintenance.

Just because we don't have an excess levy doesn't mean that we are bad people.  It means merely that we don't have the extra $$$$ to afford some things--like extra taxes.

The Legislature and the Federal government both recognize that Pocahontas County has expenses that deserve extra compensation and they provide it abundantly.   The matter then is not more $$$$ but a better use of the dollars we have.

Questions:  What are we doing with the money that we have in hand?

How would we make it if we lost the Forest money and/or the bonus state money?

We need to start living within our means!!!

  1. We have board members who cannot speak proper English, let alone plan a complex budget. You are correct that the Forest Service money is "free money" for the Board. There is no reason we need a levy in Pocahontas County. We need GOOD MANAGEMENT of the schools.

    1. None of the money they get is free it all comes from our pockets and the board has a obligation to spend it wisely and have a balanced budget.
Sadly Bush ran up a 5.6 trillion in debt when our deficit was manageable then the man who said it was unpatriotic to do that has ran it up 8 trillion and still h as 14 months to go.the board us following by example and instead of doing some hard work and hard decision to boot follow in the steps of those who feel our money is theirs and they only take more instead of making do with what they have as most taxpayers have to do.
They think all the money they are allowed is free and endless.
They fail to think long term.
I know one day my home will need a new roofs water heater and HC system and I put back money every month . Just a little is saved every month but over the 10 to 15 year period I have decided the above items will need replaced the money will be there.
It's called common sense math something they should be able to comprehend, but have clearly failed at.
Yes I'd like to buy a new car and pc and deer rifle all new cloths every year but that's called short term thinking. You can only stretch a tax payers dollar so far before it runs out when you waste a lot of it on short term items to make you look good.

    2. If you're talking about Obama, GW Bush handed Obama a $1.4 trillion deficit. Obama has reduced Bush's deficit to just $492 billion. Please don't lie and think people will just believe it.

  2. Before you call another man a lie you should make sure you actually know what your talking about.
When Bush took office the deficit was 5.760 trillion when Bush left office it was 10.6 trillion . It now stands at 18.5 trillion and he still has about 14 months to go. How you get a reduction it that number is beyond me.
They both have screwed up big time . Perhaps you can contact one of the school board members and get them to do the math for you.
It might take you awhile to do the math with your 10 fingers and 12 toes.
Here's a hint for you there is no way anyone but Obama himself can twist those numbers around to show a decrease, only a professional lier could and only a fool would believe them.

    1. Supervise but I made it clear that Bush screwed up and Obama screwed up even more.
Do not blame me because the voters were making bad choices.
Yes it's a common tactic to claim anti Obama critics are racist but I did not like Bush .the fact is inactive last 14 year's we have gone in debt to about. 13 trillion dollars compared to the last 224 year's totalling about 5trillion . If you are unable to see a issue with that please feel free to blame me .the fact is our last 2 presidents have spent money they did not have , I'm sorry the biggest abuser happens to be a man who identifys himself as black.frankly I could care less What his skin color is he's just spent the cash .
If it makes you feel better you can blame his white side .myself I just see the man and his politics I could care less about his skin .it's what's inside that counts.
